Your child’s dentist can do things like adjust office lighting and sound for patients with sensory issues, use special equipment to treat patients, and provide additional staff to ensure that special needs patients get the personalized care they need.
Special needs dentists know how to treat patients with a wide variety of physical, mental, and developmental impairments. Your child’s dentist will know how to keep them safe and comfortable as they get the dental care they need.
A wide variety of sedation options are available, which allow their patients to rest, relax, and even sleep soundly through their appointment. Sedation is a very useful tool for patients who may otherwise have trouble being treated in a traditional dental environment.
If your child has special needs, we ask that you give us a call ahead of time to inform Dr. An if your child has any special requirements, allergies, fears, or physical limitations so we can be prepared to properly accommodate them.
Providing high-quality special needs care starts with understanding what medical conditions, if any, your child has and what medications if any, they take. We need to know if there is a risk of contraindications from providing them with other medications and if they are at higher risk for certain procedures.
Sedation is a useful tool to relieve dental anxiety, reduce sensitive gag reflexes, and improve mobility in patients with special needs. We offer a few different sedation options.
An oral exam and x-rays will give us an idea of your child’s current oral health state. We will look for signs of tooth decay, gum disease, and oral cancer.
After examining your child’s mouth, we can discuss any present oral health problems and potential treatment routes. If your child is due for a dental cleaning, we will scale, brush, and floss their teeth. From there, we can discuss minimally invasive restorative treatment if it is necessary.

If your child requires dental sedation but also takes medication to treat a medical condition, this may affect their eligibility to be a candidate for sedation. The medications in the sedative may be something your child is allergic to, can react with existing medications that they take, or increase the risk of complications if they affect their breathing or heart rate.
Be aware that certain medications like cough syrups can be loaded with sugar which may be more appealing to your child but can increase their risk of cavities. Other medications cause dry mouth as a side effect, inhibiting saliva production.
This can also increase cavity risk because saliva neutralizes the acidity of your mouth to protect your enamel against acid attacks and it also washes away left-behind food particles. Please let us know about any medications that your child takes so we can make alterations to their treatment plan as needed and inform you about what could be negatively affecting their oral health.
If your child has physical limitations or a sensory disorder, you can start by choosing the right toothbrush. Let your child choose their own toothbrush so they can choose something that they like to use.
However, make sure the bristles are soft and that it’s dexterity-friendly. This may mean choosing a larger handle toothbrush or an electric toothbrush which takes less work. Show your child how to thoroughly brush their teeth by demonstrating it to them and then encourage them to do it on their own.
Even when your child can brush their own teeth, monitor them to ensure that they’re brushing for at least 2 minutes and using the right technique. Children with certain physical disabilities may need you to brush their teeth for them.
Only use the age-appropriate amount of fluoride toothpaste that is no more than the size of a grain of rice before the age of 3. Children 3 to 6 years, old can use a pea-sized amount.
